In the 16th century, Egyptians took authority of northern Nubia, while the Kingdom of Sennar took control of the south. During Muhammad Ali's administration in the early nineteenth century, the entire territory fell under Egyptian authority, and eventually became a combined Anglo-Egyptian condominium.

Nubia:

  • an ancient region in the Nile River Valley, on the site of present day southern Egypt and northern Sudan
