What is the atomic number of an atom?

it identifies a chemical element, and is the charge number of the nucleus. for example, Hydrogen has 1... Oxygen has 8... Lithium has 3... etc

The atomic number or proton number (symbol Z) of a chemical element is the number of protons found in the nucleus of every atom of that element.
