Gloeocapsa, genus in the order Chroococcales,
phylum Cyanophyta (blue-green algae), with
either single or clustered cells enclosed in
concentric layers of mucilage. Largely
terrestrial, they are found on rocks or moist
soils. Some are symbiotic with fungi, forming
lichens
