Transcription is the process of genetic expression whereby a gene (DNA) is used to synthesize a mRNA molecule. The process which is carried out by an enzyme called RNA polymerase follows the complementary base pairing rule proposed by Chargaff.

The complementary base pairing rule states that an Adenine base will always hydrogen pair with Thymine (Uracil) base while the Guanine base will always hydrogen bond to the Cytosine base. That is, A-T(U), G-T.

N.B: Uracil base replaces Thymine in the mRNA.
