What's the major difference between shia and sunni muslim communities

The main difference is in who they believe should be the caliph. Shias believe that it must be direct descendants of Muhammad’s family while Sunnis that Muhammad did not have a rightful heir and supported the rule of Abu Bakr as caliph.
