A "bee" in colonial times was an insect that highly benefited the colonist. The honey and wax were used often by them to create ointments, chap stick, candles and shoe polishes. Bee honey was used as a sweetener when the Sugar act was made; this made it much easier for the colonists to avoid from being overtaxed. A little known fact is that sometimes honey was excepted as a payment in certain circumstances.
