How are elections and the people’s right to vote an integral part of a democracy?

Democracy such as the US is a country by the people, for the people. People having the right to vote it the very basis of this viewpoint. Without voting our country wouldn’t be a democracy, it would be a dictatorship. For the country to be for the people, it needs to be by the people.
