Alena had 4 packs of gum with 6 pieces of gum in each pack. Hugh had 3 packs of gum with 5 pieces in each. Alena and Hugh have 19 pieces of gum left. Which equation can you use to find p, the number of pieces of gum Alena and Hugh chewed?

As per the given information

- so she has a total of 4 * 6 = 24

Hugh - has a total of 3 packs of gum, with 5 pieces each

- so he has a total of 3 * 5 = 15

Add the two of them up to find the total amount of gum they have

Alena + Hugh

= ( 4 * 6 ) + ( 3 * 5 )

They have 19 pieces left

So the total amount they have, minus 19 will yield the amount they chewed.

Hence:

Alena + Hugh -19

= ( 4 * 6 ) + ( 3 * 5 ) - 19
