Stephen Austin was essentially the leader of the colonists in Texas at the time it was under Mexico. He complained to the Mexican government that Texas needed to be its own state as it was being under-represented by being joined with the larger Coahuila.

He was arrested in 1833 when found to have encouraged some towns to act independent of Coahuila and was released in 1834. Whilst there, the previous Governor of Coahuila and Texas, Ramón Músquiz wrote letters to the authorities requesting Austin's release.
