Area = 13

Explanation:

see image. There's a brick of 8 whole squares on the bottom. Then a layer of 3 whole squares on top of that. There's a 1/2 a square besides the 3. Then on top, there is half of a layer of 3 squares. Half of 3 is 1 1/2.

8 + 3 + 1/2 + 1 1/2

= 8 + 3 + 2

= 13

answer is 11 units because you just count the squares and approximate where half the squares adds up
