Explanation:

What you are doing is combining like terms. Let's say v is candy I have v - .57v that means I have one candy and I ate .57 of it already so we subtract to get .43v and the .96 is brussel sprouts. We do NOT want to mix the candy and the brussel sprouts because they are different things.
