Lack of folic acid during the pregnancy could ultimately lead to birth defects on the baby including spina bifida. It is recommended that the parent conceiving the baby makes sure that they have a sufficient supply of folic acid to their body 3months before conceiving the baby and 3 months after to help prevent these defects.

A lack of folate during pregnancy is linked to major birth defects that affect the brain, spinal cord, and spine. The disease associated a deficiency of folate is anemia.
