Why are autotrophs the most important organisms on the planet?

Autotrophs or organisms that make their own food such as any type of plants are the most imporant species on Earth because without them the food chain would collapse. Plants are eaten by herbivores which are eaten by predators (carnivores). Without the plants, herbivores would starve and in return, carnivores would die off as soon as there is no more protein or meat to scavenge or eat.
