After Columbus opened the Age of Exploration many Europeans, especially Spaniards at first followed. They wanted to explore new lands, so they see is the land resourceful. Of course, they wanted to conquer most of the land and add it to their Empire, so they could control it and make use of it. That also meant using its natural resources among other things. At the end they would trade those goods, and if possible make a fortune out of it.
