in a typical bag of skittles, the ratio of red to yellow skittles is 3 to 7. If there are 40 skittles altogether, how many red skittles are there?

Answer: There will be 12 red skittles and 28 yellow ones.

Explanation:

Basically what the problem means is that for every 3 red skittles, there will be 7 yellow ones. Since 7 and 3 add up to ten, all you have to do is multiply both numbers times 4 to keep the ratio.
