It was difficult to win the war in Vietnam because the Vietcong had knowledge of the terrain.

The Americans were fighting against an army that knew the land they were fighting on incredibly well. They were experienced on their land aswell as the draft forcing troops to fight in a war which was pointless and aimless to America.
