Science goes against a lot of religious belief and also people like to believe that the government is trying to control the people. They probably are but with the simple fact that earth is flat or vaccines aren’t good isn’t something they would do to control the people. Science could be used the same way the countries use religion as a mean to control the people and people don’t want to be wrapped around the thumb of a manipulative government.
