Featured snippet from the web
Black holes of stellar mass are expected to form when very massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycle. After a black hole has formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing mass from its surroundings.

answer:

A massive star collapses. When it collapses it either beats out the forces of gravity or caves in. If it beats gravity, it becomes a neutron star. If it "loses to gravity" it will become a black hole. Hope this helped
