Why do you suppose the story of king arthur has had lasting appeal?

It's generally entertaining, particularly to Britons.

People always like a grand story about their country and when that involves knights and wizards and a magic sword that can only be pulled out of a rock by the true king, people will go nuts for it.

Plus since the basic skeleton of the story is knights and wizards in medieval England, it can be done over and over again by just putting the same characters on different quests endlessly.
