Explain why the South was interested in the western territories.

Answer:

Organized to stop the spread of slavery into the western territories (borrowed this idea from the Free Soil Party). Southerners, however, realized that this party's view on slavery was a long-term threat to their way of life. "Bleeding Kansas" Popular sovereignty and the Kansas-Nebraska Act did not work well at all.

At the start of the Civil War there were 23 Union states and 11 Confederate states. The Territories did not belong to either the North or the South, but represented a great deal of land and economic promise.
