Contrary to the imposition of this question, acknowledging the past is not a necessity. Acknowledgement of injustices can create a hostile environment for those who are near to the perpetrators and that would not be fair to those individuals. As we see in new legislation in states like Texas and Florida, we can not create hostile environments for the descendents of perpetrators of injustices and atrocities. It is not fair to make those descendents feel bad about what their ancestors have done as it was not their fault and therefore they should not have to acknowledge those things.
