David Livingstone was a British missionary who explored Africa. Over the years, Livingston visited Botswana region, traversed the Kalahari Valley and discovered the middle course of Zambezi. Winning the favor of the local people in 1855, he reached the mighty waterfall on this river and named it after Queen Victoria. Later, he traveled around other parts of Africa, looking for sources of the Nile. During his 15-year journey, he preached Christianity, described the areas traveled and created their maps. He was an opponent of slavery and fought for its abolition. In 1865 he set out on his next expedition, and around 1870 he was declared missing. He was found in 1871, and died two years later, in 1873.
