The temperature is spread from the cup to your skin which in turn spreads thermal energy

Answer:

Do you mean why? Well, the human body senses temperature changes through specialized nerve endings called thermoreceptors, located just beneath the skin. These receptors are distributed throughout the body and are constantly transmitting temperature information to the brain.
