put (1) into (2)

multiply through by 3

6x + x - 30 = 12

7x - 30 = 12

7x = 42

x = 42/7

x equals 6

put x = 6 into (1)

y = 1/3x - 10

y= 1/3 (6) - 10

y = 2 - 10

y = -8
