Defense was the primary reason for the Interstate System. President Eisenhower supported the Interstate System because he wanted a way of evacuating cities if the United States was attacked by an atomic bomb. Nowadays, its purpose is to provide high-speed, high-capacity system of highways without stoplights and with exits spaced, whenever possible, at least a mile apart as well as way of transportation.

The highways were built to provide a smoother path for transportation such as hauling wood crates.
