∴ The actual distance between the two houses is 72 miles

∵ The scale on Jeremy's map is
(1)/(2) inch is equivalent to 8 miles

∴ Each
(1)/(2) miles on the map represents actual distance 8 miles

By using the ratio method

→ Map length : Actual length

→ inch : miles


(1)/(2) : 8

→ x : 72

By using cross multiplication

∵ x × 8 =
(1)/(2) × 72

∴ 8 x = 36

- Divide both sides by 8

x = 4.5

x represent the distance between the two houses on the map
