Godzilla (Gojira)(1954) symbolizes the threat of nuclear weapons and power. The director (Ishiro Honda), purposely filmed Godzilla's rampage to mirror the atomic bombing of japan. Although these dark symbolic messages slowly crept out of the Godzilla sequels, occasionally a movie is made with similar symbolic messages (Godzilla 1984, Shin Godzilla).

Answer:

Gojira (ゴジラ) is a portmanteau of the Japanese words: gorira (ゴリラ, "gorilla") and kujira ( 鯨 クジラ , "whale"), owing to the fact that in one planning stage, Godzilla was described as "a cross between a gorilla and a whale", due to its size, power and aquatic origin.
