"Apartheid" was a political and social system that established effective - legal, social and physical - separation or segregation between the black majority and the white population of South Africa. Both racial groups had to live and develop separately. It was deeply inhuman and excluding. It came to an end in the 1990s when it was supressed, when universal suffrage was allowed in South Africa and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela became president of the country.
