A nest is 15 meters high in a tree. From it’s nest, a bird flies 17 meters to the ground to reach a leaf. How far is the leaf from the base of the tree?

Explanation:

The nest, leaf and base of the tree are all points that form a right angle triangle.

The longest side is the distance from the nest to the leaf 17 m.

Using Pythagoras Theorem

17² = 15² + (distance from base to leaf)²

289 = 225 + (dist. 4rm base 2 leaf)²

289 - 225 = 64

64 = ( dist....base to leaf)²

Square root both sides

Dist from base to leaf = 8 meters
