An atom is the smallest unit of matter that consist of three basic particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus which is at the center of the atom contains the protons that are positively charged and the neutrons that have no charge. The outermost regions of the atom are called electron shells and contain the electrons that are negatively charged and in constant motion.
