Both the tricuspid and the bicuspid valves are also known as atrioventricular valves. They ensure that blood flows in only one direction that is from the auricles to the ventricles. During ventricular contraction, the valves close acting as blood reservoir and are prevented from turning inside out by tough strands of connective tissue called tendinous cords. The blood flows directly into ventricles. The ventricles have thick muscular walls and pump blood out of the heart via the arteries.
