You buy a container of cat litter for $12.25 and a bag of cat food for x dollars. The total purchase is $19.08, which includes 6% sales tax. Write and solve an equation to find the cost of the cat food. PLEASE include an equation and explain how you did it, with details.

12.25+x (0.06) = $19.08
$19.08 x 0.06 = $1.1448 (amount of sales tax)
now subtract the sales tax from the total amount
$19.08 - $1.1448 = $17.9352
$17.9352-$12.25 (cat litter) = $5.69 (cat food)

Answer:

The cat food costs $5.75

Cost of litter, 12.25

Cost of cat food, X

Total including tax, 19.08

(12.25 + x)*1.06 = 19.08

Divide both sides by 1.06

(12.25 + x)*1.06/1.06 & 19.08/1.06

Simplify

12.25 + X = 18

Subtract both sides by 12.25

12.25 + x - 12.25 = 18 - 12.25

x = 5.75

Explanation:

Hope this helps! Shalom
