An HIM researcher is interested in studying the roles and functions of individuals who are engaged in health informatics positions. The researcher would like to have three focus groups of HIM/HI professionals who are working in this capacity. The researcher will formulate questions to ask the focus groups and analyze the interviews using qualitative research methods and analysis. Also, the researcher will send a survey to a representative sample of HIM/HI professionals to determine their roles and functions in their respective positions.

Required:
a. What type of study design is this?
b. Will this type of study need to go through the IRB process? Why or why not?
c. What types of information will the HIM researcher need to submit to the IRB? Under what level will it be reviewed (not research, no human subject involvement, exempt, expedited, full board review)?
