what was the cause of political paralysis in the gilded age? how do we refute that paralysis existed?

The panic of 1873 was mostly caused by excessive speculation. To fund over-expansion, banks made far too many risky loans. People were unable to repay their debts when earnings did not materialize. Mistrust of the government lead to high inflation of the greenback.
