Cause and effect all starts with a reason for a certain event, for example perhaps a group of children going into an abandoned house that is rumored to be "haunted", which caused an effect. So, in this case the children going into an abandoned house that is rumored to be haunted (cause) which then lead into a result, a ghost started to chase them around the house in till they could manage an escape. (effect) Although creating a very good story for us to read, cause and effect has real life examples. The answer is the fourth option or "it presents the reasons something happened and describes the result."
