Explanation:

A = area of rectangle + area of triangle

Look at the triangle. It has a base of 8 cm. we need the height.

Half of the trianfgle is a right triangle with hypotenuse 5 cm and leg 4 cm. Using the well-known Pythagorean triple 3, 4, 5, the other leg is 3 cm. That is the height of the triangle.

A = LW + (1/2)bh

A = 8 cm * 4 cm + (1/2)(8 cm)(3 cm)

A = 32 cm^2 + 12 cm^2

A = 44 cm^2
