Where did the system of Arabic numerals come from originally? To what regions did it spread after al-Khwarizmi wrote his book on the topic?

They came from India in the 6th or 7th century and were introduced to Europe through the writings of al-Khwarizimi in the 12th century or so. The subjects of studies were algebra and algorithms.
