Explanation:

Area of shaded part = area of square - area of circle

area of square = length²

12² = 144

Area of a circle = πr²

r = radius = 12/2 = 6

(3.14) x 6² = 113.04

Area of shaded part = 144 - 113.04 = 30.96

rounding off to the nearest whole number gives 31
