What was the "bloody stalemate" on the western front in WWI?

German success, then stalemate

Marne in early September 1914. This staunch rearguard action destroyed German hopes of a rapid victory in the west and defeated the Schlieffen Plan. The battle on the Western Front descended into a bloody stalemate that was not broken until the spring of 1918.
