x + 3x = 6
4x = 6
Explanation: add x (1x) and 3x together as they are like terms
4x 6
—- = —
4. 4
6/4 = 1.5
x = 1.5
If we check our work, you can see it is correct
1.5 + 3(1.5) = 6
1.5 + 4.5 = 6 is a true statement.
Therefore, x = 1.5
