Why did Luther say he did not accept the authority of the pope and councils?

Luther argued that nothing in the Bible granted the pope authority to free a person of his sins in life or after death. Only God could do this, he wrote. A legend grew that Luther personally nailed the "Ninety-Five Theses" to the door of the Wittenberg church. ... He screamed at Luther to renounce his heresy.
