I need help with this problem. One number is 6 less than another number. The sum of the numbers is 24. Let x and y be the two numbers.

Explanation:

ok looking at what they give us in the question we can see that we have two equations. to solve for it be will need to combine them together

note that because they use the word sum we know it's addition

y= x-6

x+y=24

now that we have these we can substitute y=x-6 for the y in our addition equaution such that we have it in terms of one variable:

x+ (x-6) = 24

2x-6=24

2x=30

x=15

now going back we can find Y

15+ y = 24

y=9
