The ability to travel freely between the two parts of Berlin came to an end. The Berlin Wall, which ran through cemeteries, along canals, and through city streets, was a chilling emblem of the Iron Curtain that separated Europe between communism and democracy. The Cold War's epicenter was Berlin.
