tan2(x) + 1 = sin2(x)/cos2(x) + 1 = [sin2(x) + cos2(x)]/cos2(x) = 1/cos2(x) = (1/cos(x))2 = sec2(x). Thus tan2(x) + 1 = sec2(x).
