RNA is a single-stranded molecule, unlike DNA, which is double-stranded. It is composed of much shorter chains of nucleotides. RNA has a backbone comprising alternating sugar and phosphate groups. One of the four bases – adenine, uracil, cytosine or guanine is attached to each sugar.
