You can use a number line to solve this.

(It's not perfect, but as I can't draw out a number line here, it's the best I can do.)

As you can see, the negative numbers are on the left side, and the positive numbers are on the right side. Zero is neither negative or positive, so it is in the middle.

The negative numbers are on the left side because they are smaller than the positive numbers. As you go left on the number line, the numbers get smaller, and as you go right, the numbers get bigger.

Explanation:

If you picture a number line, you will see that the positive numbers are always to the right and the negative numbers are always to the left.

Zero is still a positive number because it doesn't have a minus sign in front of it.

Negative numbers wouldn't be greater than positive numbers because they are sub zero and therefore become less.
