our objective is to get the variable (x) by itself

To do so we use inverse operations

so to get rid of the 14 we subtract 14 but whatever you do to one side you have to do to the other so we subtract each side by 14

14-14 cancels out

21-14=7

now we have

7x=7

now we want to get rid of the 7

to do so we divide by 7 but remember whatever we do to one side we have to do to the other side so we divide each side by 7

7/7 cancels out

7/7=1

we're left with x=1
