Where "x" is the input and "the expression" results in an output. Whatever the input is you plug into "x" and replace all "x"s with the input

Here, we are given the function k(x) = 8 - x and we want to find k(-4)

This can be rewritten as k(-4) = 8 - x

==> replace all x's with -4

k(-4) = 8 - (-4)

==> remove parenthesis

k(-4) = 8 + 4

==> add 8 and 4

k(-4) = 12
