The Maritime colonies (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island) were struggling economically, while the Province of Canada (made up of the former colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada) was doing better. The western colony of British Columbia was also struggling economically. all of these factors led the colonies to come together and form a confederation.
