Why would the fact that Texas was nearly bankrupt be considered a serious problem for the new nation?

Texas is a generally large state, if a larger state is bankrupt it is worse for the nation. Texas being bankrupt can also cause harmful rioting and chaos in the state. Chaos in a large state such as Texas can cause the nation to look unsafe.

As a new nation, the economic state of all of the smaller states present in the country directly affected not only international view but also internal affairs as far as politics go. And as many countries were yet developing their view of the United States, Texas having economic issues showed them that the country was prone to having internal management issues in the future.

Hope it helps!
